Covenanted Presbyterians
A friend invited us (church friends) to attend Good Friday service. I declined since I, being a Covenanted Presbyterian CLC-er, don't believe in holy-days or holy seasons. A Christian brother of mine (not the same inviting friend) did not understand what I said. I am posting my reply publically to benefit others in addition to him:
(CLC or Covenant Life Church is a Gospel-focused church in Gaithersburg, MD and is part of the Sovereign Grace Ministries family of churches. Sovereign Grace Ministries is one of the 5 or 6 conservative Christian denominations I recommend to people.)
"Although I am full member of CLC, I am Covenanted Presbyterian ("covie" for short) in belief. Covies would agree with 85% of CLC's doctrine and practice. Covies believe the same Gospel and Doctrines of Grace as CLC. Covies believe that Scripture (and Scripture Alone!) governs worship and tells us how we should worship God instead of human preferences/rights governing worship. Though CLC has that same basic belief, CLC is "essentially Reformed...." unlike Covies which are more Reformed and would differ to a certain extent on worship. Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura) is basically why covies don't follow or practice holy-days or holy seasons (Christ-mass, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, Advent, Halloween, saint's days, &c.) and other worship elements. That is one reason why I declined the Good Friday (holy-day) service."

Whit,
Thanks for your post. I pray that more will come to the understanding of Scripture alone as you have put forth, as well as is contained in the Westminster Standards.
Have you been able to make it over to Westminster Presbyterian lately? I was able to see Rev. Isbell at a recent Colloquium.
Hope all is going well.
Warmly,
JM
Great post. It is sad when people make man-made holidays up and above the day that God ordained, the Sabbath.
I don't get your stand. It was a chance for you to fellowship and worship and declined.
There is one body.
Can you tell me the verse that prohibits worship on Friday? (without appealing to someone elses writings.)
Yes, there is one body the Church whose sole and only Head is Jesus Christ as it says in 1.Cor. 12. No, I cannot show a verse the explicitly prohibits worship on any particular day. I attend Public Worship on Saturday during certain times of the year. Prohibition of worshipping on a particular day is not the point. It is not worship itself that is prohibited on any particular day, but rather novel innovations (holy-days, instruments, choirs, songs apart from Scripture, &c.) are not Scripturally permitted within worship. It is no sin to decline participation in such innovations. Where is the Scriptural warrant for those innovations?
Surely you are not suggesting we can't use instruments!!? Psalm 150
"It is no sin to decline participation in such innovations. " Neither is it sin to participate. There is freedom in Christ, 1 Cor.10:23-32
There is no scriptual warrant for a "Good Friday Holiday", but I worshipped Him.
God Bless You and Peace be unto you,
Mike
I will answer this later. Currently, my mind is filled with concern and prayers for my fellow Hokies. Christ's Peace to you.
